Space Maintainers

Baby teeth do more than help children chew and smile — they also hold space for the adult teeth developing underneath. When a baby tooth is lost too early because of decay, infection, or injury, nearby teeth may begin to shift into the empty space. This can make it harder for the permanent tooth to come in properly.

At SmileVerse Dental, we may recommend a space maintainer to help preserve the natural space until the adult tooth is ready to erupt. A space maintainer is a small, custom-made dental appliance that is designed to comfortably fit your child’s mouth and help guide healthy dental development.

Space maintainers are not needed for every missing baby tooth. Dr. A will carefully evaluate your child’s age, dental development, X-rays, bite, and which tooth was lost before recommending the best option.

Why Your Child May Need a Space Maintainer

A space maintainer may help:

  • Keep nearby teeth from drifting into the empty space
  • Support proper eruption of the adult tooth
  • Reduce the risk of future crowding or bite problems
  • Help protect your child’s developing smile

What to Expect

The process is simple and gentle. After evaluating your child’s tooth and X-rays, we will discuss whether a space maintainer is recommended. If needed, the appliance is custom-fitted for your child and checked at routine visits to make sure it continues to fit well as your child grows.

Our goal is to protect your child’s smile early, so future dental development can stay on the right path.
