Sometimes a simple filling isn’t enough to protect a tooth, especially when a cavity is large or the enamel has weakened. That’s when dental crowns come in. At SmileVerse Dental, we use crowns to restore strength, function, and confidence to growing smiles.
Led by Dr. Farqad Abuoudeh, our team combines advanced techniques with kid-friendly communication to make dental care easy and stress-free. From superheroes and color themes to digital technology that lets kids see their own X-rays, every detail of our Las Cruces office is designed to make your child feel comfortable and proud of their care.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a protective “cap” that covers and seals a damaged or weakened tooth. It restores the tooth’s original shape and function, helping your child chew, speak, and smile with confidence.
Crowns are used when too much of the tooth structure is lost to support a filling alone. They act like a suit of armor, strong, durable, and custom-fitted, protecting the tooth from further damage or decay.
At SmileVerse Dental, we offer both tooth-colored (white) crowns and stainless steel crowns, depending on your child’s needs, tooth location, and age. Dr. Abuoudeh always takes time to explain each option clearly so parents can make confident decisions.
When Does a Child Need a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns may be recommended for children when:
- A cavity is too large for a filling
- A tooth has been chipped or cracked
- A baby tooth needs protection until it naturally falls out
- A tooth has weakened after a pulpotomy (a “baby root canal”)
- There’s a risk of enamel breaking down further
- Crowns are needed for developmental defects or early wear
Even though baby teeth eventually fall out, preserving them is often essential to maintain spacing and alignment for permanent teeth. A crown helps avoid pain, infection, or premature loss that could lead to orthodontic issues later on.
Types of Dental Crowns for Children
At SmileVerse Dental, we customize every treatment based on your child’s specific needs. The two most common crown types we use are:
1. Tooth-Colored (Composite or Zirconia) Crowns
These crowns are carefully shaded to match your child’s natural teeth, making them virtually invisible when they smile. They are often used for front teeth or visible areas where aesthetics matter most.
Benefits:
- Natural, white appearance
- Metal-free and biocompatible
- Durable and stain-resistant
- Blends seamlessly with surrounding teeth
2. Stainless Steel Crowns
These crowns are incredibly strong and long-lasting, making them ideal for back molars that handle most of the chewing. They’re often the best choice for baby teeth that will eventually fall out but still need to stay healthy and functional in the meantime.
Benefits:
- High durability for active kids
- Quick, cost-effective protection
- Excellent longevity
- Minimal tooth reduction needed
Dr. A will always discuss which crown type fits your child’s treatment goals, comfort, and appearance preferences.
What to Expect During a Crown Appointment
We know that dental visits can feel intimidating for children, so we make the process as easy and comfortable as possible. Here’s what typically happens during a crown appointment:
1. Comfort and Preparation
We start by ensuring your child feels relaxed and comfortable. Nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) is available for added calm if needed.
2. Gentle Numbing
A small amount of local anesthetic keeps the tooth completely numb throughout the procedure.
3. Cleaning and Shaping the Tooth
Dr. A carefully removes decay or damage while preserving as much healthy enamel as possible. The tooth is shaped so the crown can fit securely.
4. Fitting and Placement
The chosen crown, tooth-colored or stainless steel, is placed over the tooth and adjusted for a perfect fit.
5. Cementing the Crown
Once everything looks and feels right, the crown is bonded in place and polished.
The entire process typically takes one visit. Most children are surprised at how easy and quick it feels, and leave with a tooth that looks and feels like new.
What to Expect After a Crown
Dental crowns are designed to last for years with proper care. After placement, your child may feel a little pressure or sensitivity for a few days, but this usually fades quickly.
To keep the crown in great condition:
- Brush twice a day and floss gently around the tooth
- Avoid very sticky or hard foods for the first few days
- Continue regular dental visits every six months
- Let us know if the crown ever feels loose or uncomfortable
For baby teeth, stainless steel crowns will fall out naturally with the tooth. Permanent teeth with tooth-colored crowns will need the same regular care as natural teeth.
Advanced Technology, Gentle Approach
At SmileVerse Dental, we believe transparency builds trust. That’s why every treatment, including crowns, is explained clearly, with visuals from intraoral cameras and digital imaging. Kids can see their own teeth on the screen, and parents can understand exactly what’s being done and why.
Our advanced tools also help us complete treatments efficiently and safely, minimizing time in the chair and maximizing comfort.
