Gentle Ways to Help Stop Cavities
At SmileVerse Dental, we believe in using the most conservative treatment possible whenever appropriate. In some cases, that may mean using Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) to help stop a cavity from getting worse. In other cases, we may recommend the SMART approach, which combines SDF with a protective tooth-colored restoration.
Both options are designed to treat cavities in a more gentle, child-friendly way.
What is SDF?
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a liquid medication placed on a cavity to help slow or stop tooth decay. It is quick, simple, and often does not require drilling or numbing.
SDF can be a helpful option for young children, anxious children, or situations where we want to manage decay in a more conservative way.
What is SMART?
SMART stands for Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Treatment.
The SMART approach uses SDF first to help stop the cavity, and then places a protective restoration, often glass ionomer, over the area. This helps protect the tooth and restore its shape and function while still keeping treatment as conservative as possible.
What is the difference between SDF and SMART?
The main difference is:
- SDF alone helps arrest the cavity
- SMART uses SDF plus a restoration to cover and protect the tooth
In other words, SMART builds on SDF by adding a protective filling material in selected cases.
Why Parents May Choose these Options
Depending on the tooth and the size of the cavity, SDF or SMART may offer:
- little to no drilling in selected cases
- no numbing
- a more comfortable experience for children
- a conservative way to manage cavities
- an option for children who may not yet be ready for traditional treatment
Important Things Parents Should Know
SDF can turn the decayed part of the tooth dark or black as the cavity arrests. This is an expected part of treatment and an important factor to consider.
With SMART, part of that treated area may be covered by the restoration, depending on the tooth and the size of the cavity.
Not every cavity is a candidate for these treatments. Some teeth still need a traditional filling or crown. The best option depends on your child’s age, comfort level, cavity size, and the condition of the tooth.
Our approach at SmileVerse Dental
At SmileVerse Dental, we carefully evaluate each child and each tooth to determine the most appropriate treatment. When possible, we look for gentle, minimally invasive ways to treat decay while protecting healthy tooth structure and making the experience easier for kids.
